My Journey

Throughout this term my journey towards optimal health in mind, body and spirit has brought me to a new view of life and how we can experience happiness and wholeness.  I have enjoyed the many exercises that we have been asked to do throughout this term; so it is truly hard to pick just two.  But I will try and narrow it down.  I would start with the subtle mind practice this helped me bring my mind to a sense of clearness and helped me realize I have control over my thoughts and the unnecessary chatter that sometimes fills my mind; and the process in which I can practice to have control over my mind and thoughts.  The next one would be the loving kindness practice, this is one of my favorites because it is not just about oneself but the benefits you can express towards others and this gives you a sense of happiness to feel that you not only wish well for yourself and your loved ones but also for those that you do not know.  I hope to implement these exercises into my life as my journey carries me forward.  Thanks for reading!  ~Kat~

  1. I have to say by far of all the exercises we've completed that the subtle mind has been the most helpful as my mind loves to "chatter" which has been a source of insomnia my entire life. When I am off work and have the opportunity to sleep I would often sit there for 30+ minutes waiting for my mind to "quiet" before I could fall asleep, and if I woke up the entire process would start all over again. My mind is always filled with an ever growing "to-do" list that never seems to get done and thoughts of requirements for my son's school, school, work and being a wife and mother often flood my mind.

Not to mention in my house we have 3 adults and 3 children, and 4 cats now. My sister in law and her son moved in with us and there is always something going on. So being able to quiet my mind and allow thoughts (and sounds) to come and go as they please without focusing on them has truly helped my overall stress level.

I didn't find the loving kindness as beneficial personally or very easy to complete, loving kindness towards others is easy but towards myself is still something I struggle with. They say practice makes perfect so I will keep practicing.

I am glad you found both beneficial! Good luck to you in your journey!

  2. Hi Kat,
The loving kindness practice is my favorite as well. I have to do this several times a day, especailly after driving a long commute to and from work. It helps me refocus and helps during all of the busy activities in our household. Everyone has their own priorities at home and it is easy to get upset. Ever since I have been using this loving kindness approach I have have been able to keep my composure much easier.

  3. Hi Kat,

I also enjoyed the loving/kindness exercise. Truly I didn't realize how much happiness and peace I would get from sending the very same to others. It's often that you hear it is rewarding to help others, and that may be true when you have something obvious and physical to show for it. Something to be proud of so to say... "I did that for them," etc etc. But to do something in your mind for them, and send them positive energy, when there is something to do that is not brag worthy, this bringing me true happiness was definitely not something I anticipated. I am so very happy to have taken this class and definitely plan to continue the exercises.

    Great post!

  4. After reading your post, I had a thought that the first line in this post would be a good way to start your introduction for your final project.
